Inner beauty

Inner beauty is a concept used to describe the positive aspects of something that is not physically observable.
While most species use physical traits and pheromones to attract mates, some humans claim to rely on the inner beauty of their choices. Qualities including kindness, sensitivity, tenderness or compassion, creativity and intelligence have been said to be desirable since antiquity. However new research comparing what humans claim to find attractive to their actual mating habits underlines the superficiality of "inner beauty," underlining the fact that the human animal relies on physical traits and pheromones just like every other animal to find a mate. That said, whether "inner beauty" does or does not measurably affect humans' mating habits, some traits classified as "inner beauty" do give an evolutionary survival advantage to either the individual or mating couple or group or all three.

Keep Your Skin Healthy

The best way to keep your skin healthy,
Limit time in the sun - Try to stay out of the sun during 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. This is when the sun’s rays are strongest. Don’t be fooled by cloudy skies. The sun’s rays can pass through clouds. Even people use to get sunburned, if they are in water, so be careful when you are in a pool, lake, or the ocean.

Use sunscreen - Look for a sunscreen lotion with an SPF (sun protection factor) number of 15 or higher. It is better to choose sunscreens with “broad spectrum” on the label. “Water resistant” sunscreen stays on your skin even if you get wet or sweat, but it isn’t waterproof and needs to be put on about every 2 hours.

Wear protective clothing - A hat with a wide brim can shade your neck, ears, eyes, and head. Also look for sunglasses that block 99 to 100 percent of the sun’s rays. Incase, if you have to be in the sun, wear loose, lightweight, long-sleeved shirts and long pants or long skirts.

Avoid tanning - Don’t use sunlamps or tanning beds, because tanning pills are not approved by the FDA and it might not be safe.

Your skin may change with age. But remember, there are things you can do to help. Check your skin often. If you find any changes that worry you, see your doctor

  • Apply the nail remover, before you use to apply the polishes on the nail. Though, you don’t have to remove the old polishes. It helps to remove the grease on the nails that makes your polish long lasting.
  • Wipe the top of the nail bottle with some cotton, so that excess nail polish gets removed and polish wear looks good.
  • More beauty companies come up with attractive and matching lip colors along with nail polishes to enhance the look.
  • It is always good to apply thin coats of nail color apart from thick nail polishes. It makes the process easier and quicker.

Prevent Carbon Monoxide Poisoning: The Quiet Killer

A mother and sonPrevent carbon monoxide poisoning by having your fuel-burning appliances serviced annually and by installing a battery operated carbon monoxide detector. Check or change its batteries each time you change your clocks. Download a video that shows where exposures can occur in your home.

Daylight Savings Time begins at 2:00 a.m. on the first Sunday in March. When you set your clock ahead one hour, remember to check or change the batteries in your battery operated carbon monoxide detector. Each year unintentional CO poisoning not linked to fires kills about 450 Americans and poisons at least 20,000.

You can prevent CO poisoning by having your fuel burning appliances serviced annually and by installing a battery operated carbon monoxide detector. Check or change its batteries each time you change your clocks.

Screen capture from CDC-TV: Quiet Killer Watch or download the video. (Video icon 3:15 mins)

Protect your family and prevent CO poisoning by taking just a few simple steps:

* Have your heating system, water heater, and any other gas, oil, or coal burning appliances serviced by a qualified technician every year.
* Install a battery-operated CO detector in your home and check or replace the battery when you change the time on your clocks each spring and fall. If the detector sounds, leave your home immediately and call 911.
* Don't burn anything in a stove or fireplace that isn't vented.
* Don't run a car or truck inside a garage attached to your house, even if you leave the door open.
* Don't heat your house with a gas oven.
* Never use a generator, charcoal grill, camp stove, or other gasoline or charcoal-burning device inside your home, basement, or garage or near a window.
* Seek prompt medical attention if you suspect CO poisoning and are feeling dizzy, light-headed, or nauseated.

Cosmetics Protects Against Bruises, Wrinkles

Bruises
Older people may bruise more easily than younger people. And, it can take longer for the bruises to heal. Some medicines or illnesses cause easier bruising. If you see bruises and you don’t know how you got them, especially on parts of your body usually covered by clothing, see your doctor.

Wrinkles
Over time, skin begins to wrinkle. Things in the environment, like ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun, make the skin less elastic. Gravity can cause skin to sag and wrinkle.

Certain habits like frowning also wrinkle the skin. Some of these habits are easier to change than others. You may not be able to change how you lie when you sleep, but you can quit smoking. Not smoking is a great way to prevent wrinkles.

A lot of claims are made about how to make wrinkles go away. Not all of them work. Some can be painful or even dangerous and many must be done by the doctor. Talk with a doctor specially trained in skin problems (a dermatologist) or your regular doctor if you are worried about wrinkles.

Dry Skin and Itching

Many older people suffer from dry skin, often on their lower legs, elbows, and lower arms. Dry skin feels rough and scaly. There are many possible reasons for dry skin, such as:

Not drinking enough liquids
Staying out in the sun
Being in very dry air
Smoking
Having stress

Losing sweat and oil glands (common with age) Dry skin also can be caused by health problems, such as diabetes or kidney disease. Using too much soap, antiperspirant, or perfume and taking hot baths will make dry skin worse.

Because older people have thinner skin, scratching itches can cause bleeding that can lead to infection. Some medicines make the skin itchier. Itching can cause sleep problems. If your skin is very dry and itchy, see your doctor.

Moisturizers like lotions, creams, or ointments can soothe dry, itchy skin. They should be used everyday. Try taking fewer baths and using milder soap to help your dry skin. Warm water is better than hot water for your skin. Some people find that a humidifier (an appliance that adds moisture to a room) helps.

Tips for Hair Grooming

Hair grooming is an important criterion that should be considered for hair conditioning. Make use of some of the tips for hair grooming

Apply shampoo and conditioner that suits the hair type. Choose a product that is best for conditioning without any harsh detergent like sulfates. Regular hair washing is good for hair to some extent, but with shampoos or conditioners then it obviously harms your hair.

Don’t make use of too much conditioner. Apply as per oily or dry hair, so that the conditioner may protect the hair.

Ingredients like coconut oil used in conditioners moisturizes the hair and makes your hair soft smooth and soothe the scalp.

Eggs is said to be one of the best moisturizer for dry hair. Even olive oil is considered to be good conditioner.

Massage the scalp with fingertips, so that blood circulates to the scalp. To make hair soft, shiny after washing, blot with towel and then separate with wide toothed comb.

Beauty Do's and Don'ts

DO look your age. Heavy make-up hides your young, natural beauty brands—the beauty older women try so hard to get back!
DON'T pop zits. This can cause infections and scars that are hard to get rid of.
DO wear sunscreen quality beauty products. Protect your skin from the sun to help stop early wrinkles.
DON'T be hard on yourself. Instead of thinking about what you don't like about your body, love the things that make you unique.

Does eating chocolate cause pimples?
No way—and neither do dirt, fried foods. Changes in your skin during puberty trigger acne. Stress, your period, picking at or popping your pimples, scrubbing your skin too hard, getting too much sun and using oil-based lotions, makeup, or hair gels can cause breakouts to get worse.

Teens be Cool and Best

Wash your face regularly using a mild cleanser and warm water. Be gentle—don't scrub hard! Avoid astringents, which can dry out and irritate skin.

Use only light, water-based moisturizers. Look for one that has SPF 15 or a higher number sunscreen.

For sensitive skin, try products that say "fragrance-free" or "without perfume". If you're allowed to wear makeup, use only water-based products that say "noncomedogenic" or "nonacnegenic" on the label. Make sure to take off your makeup before going to bed.

To control acne, try over-the-counter products that you can buy without a doctor's order. These products come as gels, lotions, creams, and soaps. Your doctor can treat more serious acne problems.

Drink plenty of water
Always wear "broad-spectrum" sunscreen, which protects against UVA and UVB rays. Wear sunscreen even on cloudy days. SPF alone does not protect against these two types of harmful rays. Follow the directions on the bottle to put more on after a while. Wear lipscreen with at least SPF 15. And, your skin needs more than just sunscreen.
  • Wear long-sleeve shirts, pants, and a hat.
  • Stay in the shade.
  • Stay out of the sun in the middle of the day, when rays are strongest.

Choose Attractive Eye Shadow Colors

Choose simple, natural colors that suit your skin and eye. Look for eye shadows that contrast with the shades of the eyes. Make sure that the colors chosen, not exactly match with the skin color.

For dark brown and black eyes, use brown or charcoal shadows. Khaki or brown shades with yellow undertones add beauty for green eyes. Blue eyes may wear soft browns, tans with sandy or pink undertones.

If you opt for bright or trendy colors, choose the suitable shade that balances with your skin color.

Always buy colors that blend well together. If you want your eyes attractive, impressive and no more marked lines caused by the shadow then buy blended colors.
Consider that light colors will make your eyes stand out while dark colors will minimize your eyes.

If bright shadows are applied, use them as wash over the eyelids to add other colors. As a beginner, start with light and little shadow so that the face looks beautiful.

Color Additives and Cosmetics

Color additives are subject to a strict system of approval under U.S. law. Except in the case of coal-tar hair dyes, failure to meet U.S. color additive requirements causes a cosmetic to be adulterated. Color additive violations are a common reason for detaining imported cosmetic products offered for entry into this country.

Some Basic RequirementsIf your product (except coal-tar hair dyes) contains a color additive, by law you must adhere to requirements for:

Approval. All color additives used in cosmetics (or any other FDA-regulated product) must be approved by FDA. There must be a regulation specifically addressing a substance's use as a color additive, specifications, and restrictions.
Certification. In addition to approval, a number of color additives must be batch certified by FDA if they are to be used in cosmetics (or any other FDA-regulated product) marketed in the U.S.
Identity and specifications. All color additives must meet the requirements for identity and specifications stated in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR).
Use and restrictions. Color additives may be used only for the intended uses stated in the regulations that pertain to them. The regulations also specify other restrictions for certain colors, such as the maximum permissible concentration in the finished product.

Useful Concealer Tips

The concealer should match the skin tone and it should be light shade. Make use of it to cover the dark circles around the eyes and discoloration on the face.

Make sure that you have covered the Nose Bridge and outer corner of the eyes where you tend to get dark areas.

The concealer should be applied over the foundation to cover the dark area and it should not be rubbed off.

The Concealer is not required to be used along with any makeup or powder. Just you required is little concealer and something on your lips. Ensure that the concealer is the same shade as your skin.

The Concealer should be applied as thinly as possible. You should not be too thick.

Even little concealer can be applied under the eyes if that area looks a bit dark.

Better don’t test concealer color on your hand. Match it to the skin on face or neck.

Hair Color and Cancer

Over the years, some studies have indicated a possible link between hair dye use and cancer, while others have not. In February 1994, FDA and the American Cancer Society released an epidemiologic study involving 573,000 women. Researchers found that beauty source women who had ever used permanent hair dyes showed decreased risk of all beauty products fatal cancers combined and also of urinary system cancers. The study also revealed that women who had ever used permanent hair dyes showed no increased risk of any type of hematopoietic cancer (cancer of the body's blood-forming systems).

This research, published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, did suggest that prolonged use (20 years or more of constant use) of black hair dye may slightly increase the occurrence of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and multiple myeloma, but these cases represented a small fraction of hair dye users. This beauty source study followed previous NCI studies that raised concern about the use of hair dyes and higher rates of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

In another study, published in the October 5, 1994, issue of the beauty products Journal of the National Cancer Institute, researchers from Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston followed 99,000 women and found no greater risk of cancers of the blood or lymph systems among women who had ever used permanent hair dyes.

Then in 1998, scientists at the University of California at San Francisco beauty products questioned 2,544 people about their use of hair-color products. After integrating the results of this study with those of animal and other epidemiologic studies, they concluded that there was little convincing evidence linking non-Hodgkin's lymphoma with normal use of hair-color products in humans.

The Beauty Of Your Home

Your home is an expression of your taste, and can serve to express your inner beauty while magnifying your outer beauty too. Just as the right lighting choices impact your overall quality of life, the right colors in your home can affect your mood, your relationships, your concentration and your indoor complexion.

I was watching one of those HGTV shows the other night, and was intrigued by how the designer started with a fairly hideous loft and created something that seem an exact fit with the personality of the man who had bought it. He was a pretty macho guy, and wanted things to look "masculine": living in a purple painted loft had nearly done in his sense of self.

Fortunately, this particular guy was also a lawyer, so the designer had heaps of money to work with – always a plus. But what she did surprised me. She painted one of the walls to look like it was made of leather. She brought in some leather furniture and mixed it up with an antique Chinese cabinet, a fabulous mahogany table, and some custom-built cabinetry, and created a modern take on the old-fashioned men’s smoking club. It was extremely elegant.

There’s no law that says your house should look like other peoples’ houses. Your home can fulfill its practical purpose while feeding your artistic soul. And you don’t have to have Chinese antiques to match your surroundings to your own sense of self. Your place should first make you feel glad to be there. It should be comfortable and comforting. Secondly, it can express your personal sense of style; and it’s a great way to experiment with your dramatic, playful side.

My friends had to paint their living-room because they ceiling was falling in on their heads due to earthquake activity in their (rented) Oakland house. It totally depressed them to see the cracks in the ceiling and the peeling paint extending down the walls. So much so, that they took two weeks out of their summer to re-plaster (and sand, and sand, and sand) and finally, to paint the room, which included a fourteen-foot ceiling, an arch, crown molding and a deep cove. It was a huge task!

They could have painted the room the same off-white it had always been, but after putting in all that work, they didn’t want to end up staring at a white room. So they went to the paint store and picked out chips in their favorite fantasy colors. (The idea was, "If we hate it, we’ll repaint it!) After lots of discussion and weeding-out, they realized that what they wanted to express was cheerfulness, optimism, lighthearted feelings. They chose an ultra-pale blue-lavender tint that one of their friends dubbed "blueberry milkshake". That opened the flood gates, and they painted the cove a rich, royal blue, and used a mulberry-colored enamel on the crown molding.

That was two years ago, and they’ve had nothing but compliments since. But the really wonderful thing is, to this day, they both say that being in the room makes them feel happy. My point: they used a practical need to create something beyond practical, even spiritual.

Painting is a great way to fit your environment to your inner beauty. You can be sedate, elegant, silly or wild, just by using particular colors and paying attention to light. Paint is available in every color you can imagine, and the new paints have nearly no smell at all. If you open a can of paint and find you don't like the smell, add a couple of teaspoons of vanilla flavoring to the paint and stir it in thoroughly. Sweet!

People are afraid to paint, and I'm not sure why. Paint is a thousand times simpler than wallpaper, and much better than just living with ugly walls. I can probably give you enough tips right here to make painting a breeze.

1. Beige is for the fearful. Red can cause familial disharmony and should be used only sparingly. Blues and greens feel cool, serene. Yellow is cheerful . Don't be afraid of colors. Don't waste your life painting walls beige.

2. Colors get darker once you put them on the wall. It's not because the colors actually darken: it's because, the more color that gets on the wall, the more reflected light affects the color of the other walls. The lesson here is to pick a shade somewhat lighter than you think you'll want. Start by choosing paint chips one, two and three shades lighter than your desired shade. Paint a foot-square patch of each on the wall, and compare their shades before moving on. Paint half a wall, then take a good, hard look at it and try to imagine how much darker it's going to get as you go along.

3. Before painting, overprepare. The reason many people have problems with painting is that they don't spend enough time preparing the space. Walls should be dusted, or even washed, and all spider webs, bits of sawdust, old paint flakes and what-have-you should be removed before you crack that can of paint. If paint is flaking, sand it smooth. If it's flaking badly, scrape it, then sand what's left.

Move furniture out of the room if at all possible. If you must keep things in the room, group them together and cover them securely with plastic or tarps. If you try to leave the computer uncovered, you will inevitably pour soapy water into the keyboard. It's practically a law of physics.

3. Don't wing it. We all hate to tape around moldings, ceilings and floors. We all try to paint freehand, with the idea that we can mop up any drips or goofs. We all fail miserably, and have to go back and tape with a partly-painted room. Save yourself the hassle by taping every border before you even start. Also, get heavy tarps and tape them to the floor for the inevitable occurrence of someone tripping over the partly-filled paint can.

4. Light colors may take extra coats when painted over dark ones. If you can, always paint a similar type of paint over the old one, or use a glossier paint. Flat is easily covered by semi-gloss, satin, or enamel. Enamel, on the other hand, is difficult to cover with anything but enamel. If you must cover a higher-gloss paint with a lower-gloss one, sand the original paint first, so the new paint with cling and cover rather than just beading up.

Once you've painted, you may want to consider floor coverings. Rattan, bamboo and sea grass make nice, outdoorsy rugs that feel cool on the feet and lend a touch of the seaside to any room. The dry-grass scent is light, herbal and sensuous. If you want something softer underfoot, hooked rugs from the Canadian Maritimes add brightness and charm in designs of lighthouses, fish, seabirds and colorful houses. For elegant coziness, you may decide on a Persian or Turkish area rug. A rug can change the whole feel of a room, and if it happens to have a gorgeous design, and a soft feel that invites harem-style lounging, what’s the harm in that?

I’m a big fan of most things glass, and when I was watching that show about the loft, I was making mental notes about how I would do things in my (fantasy) loft. One of the things that struck me was the fact that some loft owners create "rooms" by hanging partitions from the twenty-five foot ceilings. I thought it would be fun to create a curtain of shimmering beads hanging from those tall, tall ceilings. I envisioned a woven net of beads (individual strands would get tangled) that could be raised or lowered by means of a draw cord. Having a little time on my hands, I skipped over to www.auntiesbeads.com and checked out the Austrian crystal beads and the Czech glass beads in a million breathtaking colors. I figured I could do the curtain for under a hundred dollars! Now all I need is the loft..

Tips on Eating Better

Eating right can be hard when you do not feel like cooking or there is a fast-food place on every corner. Here are some simple things you can do to eat better:

*Start every day with breakfast. Try a low-fat whole-grain breakfast bar, nonfat or low-fat yogurt, or whole-grain toast or bagel spread with a little peanut butter, jam or low-fat cream cheese.
*Eat more fruits and vegetables, and choose whole grains like 100 percent whole wheat bread, oatmeal, or brown rice instead of refined grains like white bread and white rice.
*Choose low-fat or nonfat milk instead of whole milk or a milkshake.
*Order a plain hamburger (without sauce or mayonnaise) or a grilled (not fried) chicken sandwich. Skip the fries and try a salad with fat-free or low-fat dressing instead.
*Go easy on mayonnaise, creamy sauces, and added butter.
*Don't let sugary soda or other sweets crowd out healthy foods and beverages.

TIP: Many food labels say "low-fat," "reduced fat," or "light." That does not always mean the food is low in calories. Sometimes fat free or low-fat muffins or desserts have even more sugar than the full fat versions. Remember, fat free does not mean calorie free and calories do count!

Many people think that bigger is better. We're so used to value-size servings that it is easy to eat more than our bodies need. Eating smaller portions will help you cut down on calories and fat (and might save you money too!).

Even take-out and high-fat foods can be part of a balanced diet — if you do not eat them every day and do not eat too much of them. Here are sensible serving sizes for some favorite foods:

*French fries: 1 small serving (equal to a child's order)
*Shrimp fried rice (as a main dish): 1 cup
*Cheese pizza: 2 small slices or 1 large slice

TIP: Do you eat in front of the TV out of habit? Do you eat when you are bored, nervous, or sad? Be aware of when, where, and why you eat, and try to eat balanced meals throughout the day. Instead of reaching for that cookie, do something else like call a friend or take a walk.

Hair Beauty Products

Everywhere you look today, whether it is on television, in magazines, or on billboards, the spokesperson has gorgeous hair. Many people want to have hair that is luscious, healthy and full of body and shine. Hair that is silky and soft to the touch. Everyone wants to have luscious shiny hair that is full of body and looks healthy. The keys to beautiful hair are the right hair beauty products. What do you really need?

Although a healthy diet is one of the best ways to achieve healthy hair, there are certain guidelines and steps that you can take to make your hair healthier looking.

· Shampoo and conditioning – choosing shampoo and conditioner is the most important part of hair care. Choose a moisturizing formula for both shampoo and conditioner will leave your hair full of body.

· Weekly conditioning - it is recommended that you treat your hair with a deep conditioner at least once a week. This is especially important if you use blow dryers or curling irons.

· Leave-in conditioners – a leave in conditioner is a moisturizer that you leave in your hair. It is not heavy like rinse out conditioners and they provide an excellent barrier against everyday hazards.

· Purifying shampoo – this is perhaps one of the least purchased products on the market today, and it is perhaps the best product for your hair. When you have damaged hair, it can attract a lot more dirt from your environment. This in turn can make your hair seem dingy and dull. A purifying shampoo removes all of the dirt and oils from your hair giving it the appearance of being healthier.

· Natural hair beauty products – hair care products that contain ingredients such as jojoba are the natural alternative to hair care and contain all natural ingredients.

Your hair is the most important part of your appearance. Having split ends and frizzy hair can ruin any look you wish to achieve. Using product that are designed for specific purpose for your hair. You may want to consult your hairstylist as to what products your hair needs to achieve a glowing healthy look. Especially long hair styles or black hair styles may need special products and care. He or she may have a line of products that are perfect for you.

1970s Style Disco Makeup and Era Fashions that have a Vintage Flair

The Sixties left the coming decade with an taste for the natural, and the Seventies era particularized the “Natural Look” to makeup and hair. Hair was long, smooth, often very straight, but ideally with a flip on the ends. Think the Mary Tyler Moore show, and you've got the early to middle '70s in a nutshell. The longer hairstyles still required the large curlers (which could really damage your hair with daily use) used in the '60s to create big waves, but electric curling irons were added to the mix when Farrah Fawcett Majors became on of the decade's "It" girls. The flicked up hair cuts worn to some extent by all of Charlie's Angels was applied to bangs or wings on the sides of the head. Farrah combined flicks on both sides with a high lofted center and amazing, wavy curls in streaky golden hair. Never mind that the fabulous Angel had stylists galore to keep her look fresh and "natural"; everybody wanted to look like that. And 'that' entailed more than a superb and constantly-renewed layered haircut: it meant hours with the curling iron, plenty of hair spray or mousse and strict avoidance of anything athletic, outdoorsy or the least bit—well, you know—natural.

1970s make-up styles had a natural, surfer appeal

Along with the "natural" hair of the '70s came a natural look in skin and cosmetics. Earlier decades had made fashionable the dead white complexion, the flawless matte of a movie star skin, and the rosy blush of innocence through the magic of foundation. In the Seventies, it was cool to resemble to surfers at Venice Beach: an all over tan, a golden glow around the face, and minimal looking make up were the things to strive for. Bronzers made an appearance, fake tanning fluids turned thousands of young women bright orange, and women who today look with alarm at the spots appearing on middle aged skin laid out all summer covered all too lightly in a bikini and a slick coat of baby oil.

1970s makeup mavens lightened up on the eye makeup, with mascara nearly disappearing for daywear except for something to lengthen, not necessarily thicken the eyelashes. White or pale blue eyeliner was sometimes used on the inside lid to make the eyes appear larger, but dark eyeliners were out of fashion. Pearlescent colors were popular for eye shadow, nail polish and lipstick, and liquid eye shadows became the rage. When foundation was worn at all, it was not matted down with powder, but left alone to shine a bit.

Tips for Taking Care of Your Skin

Acne

A pimple starts when the pores in the skin become clogged with a type of oil called sebum, which normally lubricates the skin and hair. Acne is common during puberty when hormones go into overdrive, causing the skin to overproduce sebum. Because many oil-producing glands are on the forehead, nose, and chin, this area — the T-zone — is where a person is most prone to pimples.

Here are some tips to help prevent breakouts and clear them up as fast as possible:

* Wash your face twice a day (no more) with warm water and a mild soap made for people with acne. Gently massage your face with circular motions. Don't scrub. Overwashing and scrubbing can cause skin to become irritated. After cleansing, the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends applying an over-the-counter (no prescription needed) lotion containing benzoyl peroxide. This will decrease oil and bacteria.
* Don't pop pimples. It's tempting, but here's why you shouldn't: Popping pimples can push infected material further into the skin, leading to more swelling and redness, and even scarring. If you notice a pimple coming before a big event, like the prom, a dermatologist can often treat it for you with less risk of scarring or infection.
* Avoid touching your face with your fingers or leaning your face on objects that collect sebum and skin residue like the telephone receiver. Touching your face can spread the bacteria that cause pores to become inflamed and irritated. To keep bacteria at bay, wash your hands before applying anything to your face, such as treatment creams or makeup.
* If you wear glasses or sunglasses, make sure you clean them frequently to keep oil from clogging the pores around your eyes and nose.
* If you get acne on your body, try not to wear tight clothes, which don't allow skin to breathe and may cause irritation. You also might want to stay away from scarves, headbands, and caps, which can collect dirt and oil, too.
* Remove your makeup before you go to sleep. When buying makeup, make sure you choose brands that say "noncomedogenic" or "nonacnegenic" on the label. Throw away old makeup that smells or looks different from when you first bought it.
* Keep hair clean and out of your face to prevent additional dirt and oil from clogging your pores.
* Protect your skin from the sun. It may seem like a tan masks acne, but it's only temporary. A tan can cause the body to produce extra sebum, which may worsen your acne, not improve it. Tanning also causes damage to skin that will eventually lead to wrinkles and increase your risk of skin cancer.

Sun and Skin

We all know we need to protect our skin from the sun's harmful rays. Of course, it's impossible to avoid the sun — who wants to hide indoors when it feels so great to get outside and be active? And the sun's not all bad, anyway: Sunlight helps our bodies create vitamin D. So follow these tips when you're outdoors to help manage sun exposure:

* Wear sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15, even if it's cloudy or you don't plan on spending a lot of time outdoors. If you sweat a lot or go swimming, reapply sunscreen every 2 to 3 hours (even if the bottle says the sunscreen is waterproof).
* Choose a sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB rays. Look for the words "broad spectrum protection" or UVA protection in addition to the SPF of 15 or greater. Select a sunscreen that says "nonacnegenic" or "noncomedogenic" on the label to help keep pores clear.
* The sun's rays are strongest between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM, so make sure you reapply sunscreen frequently and take breaks indoors if you can. If your shadow is longer than you are tall, then it's a safer time to be in the sun (you should still wear sunscreen, though).
* Apply more sunscreen (with higher SPF) when you're around reflective surfaces like water, snow, or ice.
* We all know that the sun can damage skin, but did you know it can contribute to eye problems, too? Protect your face and eyes with a hat and sunglasses that provide 100% UV protection.
* Some medications, such as prescription acne medications or birth control pills, can increase your sensitivity to the sun, so if you're taking medication, increase your sun protection.
* If you want the glow of a tan, try faking it with self-tanners or salon tanning treatments. Avoid tanning beds, though, because although manufacturers claim that tanning beds are free of UVB rays, they still use harmful UVA rays.

Tips for How to Style Naturally Curly Hair

To be truthful, naturally curly hair is the kind of style that is not easy for everyone to accept and love. A short style may turn into a frizzy mess at the first sign of rain or elevated humidity in the air, while the mid length cuts seem to unravel halfway through the business day and before long the curly mess takes on the proportions of a bird’s nest. Fortunately, curly hair doesn’t have to be that complicated! There are a number of hairstyle ideas which will leave you pleased with your thick tresses.

* What causes frizzy curls? Not even the best shampoo will undo the frizz if you perpetuate the one behavior that causes it: the blow dryer. To help get your hair ready for being shaped into the style you have chosen, the odds are good that using a hot air dryer is your preferred method of drying, but in so doing the hair is prevented to develop its natural curl. This of course makes your blonde mane incapable of following the layered look you have chosen.

* Another heat source that has your curls see red is the straightening iron. For it to work properly the iron becomes very hot and thus temporarily relaxes the spiral but doing so comes at a cost: frizz. Short cuts will soon show signs of breakage that leave the hair looking frizzy while long cuts will not show the breakage as clearly but before long will present with split ends. Although straightened hair is the preferred condition for application of highlights and color, it is not advisable to overdo this procedure.

* Two of the most commonly quoted tips revolve around the use of conditioning products instead of shampoo and continuing with the styling while the hair is still moist. How to style your curly hair depends on the cut; generally speaking, medium cuts may just need a running through with your fingers.

* Those who have artificially curled hair will appreciate the advice to invest in a high quality leave in conditioner. Permed hair is notorious for its dryness and you will do well to augment any natural oils with a leave in product that is highly rated for its long duration of supplying nutrients and moisture to the hair.

Skin Cancer

What is skin cancer?

FishermanCancer is a disease of the body’s cells. Occasionally some cells behave in an abnormal way, and grow into a lump called a tumour. A tumour that is not cancerous is called a benign tumour. A tumour which is cancerous is called a malignant tumour.

Skin is the largest organ of the body. There are different layers to skin. The epidermis is the outer or top layer of the skin. Cells produce keratin and melanin. Keratin resists heat, cold and effects of many chemicals. Melanin gives skin its colour and absorbs ultraviolet (UV) light and provides some protection from UV. The epidermis contains three different types of cells: squamous cells, basal cells and melanocytes.

What causes skin cancer?

Skin cancer is mainly caused by cumulative exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) from the sun.

UVR disrupts the cells' genes and can cause them to grow abnormally. If these abnormal cells are not destroyed by the body's natural defence systems, they can develop into skin cancers.

There are three main types of skin cancer named after the type of cells they start from: basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma — known as non-melanocyctic skin cancers — and melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer.

Overview of the Globalization of the “Beauty Industry”

Globalization of the Beauty Industry 1945-1980,”2 provides a comprehensive overview of the growth of beauty industries.
The modern beauty industry developed in three phases:

1. Fragrance and soaps: started in the U.S. and Western Europe. Demand for these products stemmed from mid-19th century urbanization that resulted in growing stench and infectious diseases.

2. Facial beauty products: demand came from increased visual awareness that accompanied commercial photography and advances in printing, including the mass circulation of female fashion magazines.

3. Transformative beauty products: lip stick, hair dyes, and mascara. From 1914 to 1945, beauty products, as soaps and toiletries, became nearly universal in developed countries. The US Great Depression forced companies to make beauty products affordable. During this period and beyond, beauty products were marketed and developed for different audiences and ethnicities.

In the developing world, such as in southern Africa and Asia, the spread of soap and hygiene products accompanied colonial efforts to “civilize” the population. When Japan sought to “modernize” in the late 1800’s, hand washing and hair washing became popular among the elites and face “whitening,” shaving of eyebrows, and teeth blackening (all traditional practices) were banned. The use of traditional white face creams for women became a practice only used on special occasions, such as weddings. So not only the products, but their use in general became globalized.

In the U.S., the 1950’s solidified the image of the tall, shapely, blond woman as the ideal beauty, popularized by Marilyn Monroe and the Barbie doll. Television played a major role through beauty advertisements and sponsored game shows (used to brand corporations and products lines). Increased disposable income led to mass consumption of beauty products during this period. Other Western countries learned about American hygiene and beauty products through Hollywood and the movie industry. Outside the U.S., restrictions on media advertisements and sponsored games shows slowed the diffusion of these products. Government regulations abroad posed challenges as well.

Beauty pageants, such as Miss World (started in 1951 by the UK) and Miss Universe (started in 1952 in the US), became globalized, with local contests being held all over the world. The Miss World’s first dark-skinned winner was Miss India in 1966, and the first visible winner of African descent was Miss Grenada in 1970. Miss Universe developed its own “international standard of beauty,” based on face, figure, proportions, and posture and local contests began using that standard to choose representatives. US cosmetic industries co-opted the winners to become international ambassadors of their beauty products, further branding a certain image as beautiful.

By the 1980’s, local and ethnic identities in beauty ideals were being re-asserted and the market became more segmented by ethnicity, gender, and age. Yet lack of body odor, white natural teeth, slim figures, pale skins and round eyes were considered “international standards of beauty” and were being diffused all over the world. The trends and marketing practices mentioned in this historical analysis are still be used today, with even more success, as barriers (such as media advertising, government regulations, and technology) are further decreasing.

Beauty Ideals in the Non-Western Cultures: Case Study China and India

Both China and India are being influenced by Western beauty ideals and both have a large middle class with a disposable income. Advertisements plaster urban areas and Western television shows and movies are heavily distributed in both countries. Whitening face masks, soaps, and lotions are widely available in both countries. Men and women in both countries buy products to lighten their skin with hopes to achieve a better life, higher paying jobs, and higher class mates.

Much as has been written about the impact of beauty pageants in India. Beauty pageants start in high school, take place again in college, and then happen nationwide for Miss India. Commercial sponsors use the pageants to raise awareness of their products. While at the local level, girls are measured by local standards, but as the pageants get larger, international beauty standards are put in place. The first Miss World held in India, took place in 1996. Feminist groups protested, but were co-opted by right wing Hindu nationalists who protested economic liberalization and transnational corporations. The protestors succeeded in forcing the swimsuit competition to be moved to Seychelles, but Miss World was still held.3

In China, the first ever Miss Artificial Beauty was held in 2003 for Chinese contestants who had cosmetic surgery, and were not eligible for Miss World or Miss Universe. The competition still continues. Urban Chinese women in their 20’s and 30’s are increasingly getting cosmetic surgery to improve their chances for economic success, while older women in their 40’s are getting cosmetic surgery to look younger. Popular surgeries include adding a crease into eyelids to make the eyes look rounder, narrowing the nose, liposuction, and breast implants. Some women even lengthen their legs.4

Women’s groups have been mainly silent in China. Some believe this is due to the size of the “beauty industry.” In 2005, in China, the beauty industry was the 5th largest industry in the country, behind property, cars, tourism, and IT. The industry is growing at a rate of 20 percent per year.5 With the Chinese economy growing so rapidly, the beauty industries will continue to grow as well.

Treating Oily Skin with the Proper Face Care, Makeup and Therapy

Most people experience oily skin when they hit puberty and hormones begin to rampage across the bodily systems. Causes of oily skin have also been attributed to diet, stress and environmental issues, but the main reason for oily skin is the increased production of skin oils, or sebum, usually associated with hormonal changes. Remedies for oily skin range from washing practices to herbal skincare products made for the oily complexion.

Oily Skin and Acne Breakouts

Oily skin doesn't necessarily cause acne, but it can be a contributor to breakouts if the skin isn't kept clean enough. Acne occurs when pores are invaded by dirt and oil, get clogged and breed bacteria. The bacteria in the pore causes swelling and the typical pimple is filled with pus, which is the body's attempt to fight infection using white blood cells. Keeping your skin clean and pores unclogged is one important way to prevent acne breakouts. And it all starts with the way you wash your face.

Natural Beauty Product Suggestions for Oilier Skin

Oil free moisturizers usually contain glycerin and water, and some of the best products also contain tea extracts and oatmeal. Oatmeal has long been recognized as a soothing skin care product, and when used as a mask can brighten your skin without drying it out too much. Companies like Aveeno are making oatmeal based moisturizers and makeup that work wonderfully to care for the skin. Beauty tips columns always contain the oatmeal facial mask as a remedy for oily skin. Just puree oatmeal with a little water, wipe on the skin, allow to dry most but not all they way, and rinse off.

Luckily, caring for your oily skin has never been easier, since a tremendous range of products ensures that there's something for everyone. Treating oily skin is done at two levels; prevention and blemish control. Gentle treatment, the right oil-control makeup and proper nutrition can help prevent oily skin. Blemishes can be treated with tea tree oil or one of the natural remedies including green or white tea extract (powerful antioxidants) and skin calming oils such as lavender or chamomile.

Does diet and nutrition contribute to skin oils?

Some people think that chocolate or fatty foods can cause oily skin, and if you are allergic to a particular food, it may show up in the way your skin behaves. Chocolate has not been shown to increase skin oil or breakouts; in fact, dark chocolate contains antioxidants that are good for your brain and your body. But junk food like chips, high fat, high salt burgers and other fried foods may impact your skin as they do your entire body. If you're a junk food junkie and have oily skin or breakouts, take a month off from your favorite foods to see if your skin condition improves.

Antiaging therapy in the form of creams or lotions containing plant or milk acids often dry users' skins as the acids remove the top layer of skin cells from the complexion. Check out moisturizers containing alpha lipoic acid, which may decrease the oil in your skin after a short time of use.

Hair Removal Option for Women

What causes facial hair in women? The same hormones that cause it in men. Let's face it: we're a hairy breed. And in the all too human world of beauty, we value smooth, hairless skin. Our hormones create hair, even in the female of the species, and as women we spend a lot of time fighting Nature to please Fashion. Removing facial hair is an issue for women all over the world: even in ancient times, women used hot honey and tree saps to remove unwanted hair from the jaw line, upper lip, eyebrows and chin.

Waxing Unwanted Facial Hair

Today, waxing is still a popular hair removal option: it's relatively inexpensive, more thorough than plucking individual hairs with tweezers and can be done any time. Hot wax kits consist of a "wax" made of sugar or honey, (this is called "sugaring"), beeswax or resin. The easiest way to do waxing at home is to buy a microwavable wax, apply with a wooden spatula, then spread with a strip of cotton muslin and pull off the wax along with the offending hair. But, if you don't have the patience to melt the wax slowly at the recommended power setting, stir it thoroughly, test a tiny bit on the tip of your finger and ascertain whether it's too hot, you shouldn't do that kind of waxing because you run the risk of getting badly burned. Microwaves work hot and fast, and the wax must be carefully watched, timed, stirred, and tested before applying. It takes patience.

Bleaching Upper Lip Hair to Reduce its Appearance

Another popular at-home hair removal method is bleach. You can buy cream bleaching creams that are mixed with an activator and then applied to the facial hair. You cannot use cream bleaches on eyebrows or anywhere near your eyes—if they get in your eyes, you can go blind. Some people may experience facial redness or sensitivity from bleaching, so it's a good idea to do a 24 hour test patch first. But if the bleach doesn't bother your skin, and if you use it weekly, you'll not only be rendering facial hair more invisible, after awhile it will become fragile and start to break off, lessening its appearance even more.

Shaving is not a best practice for removing facial hair

Some people wonder how to remove facial hair by shaving, and this is a good place to say that shaving is a bad idea. It will leave stubble, and the only thing worse than facial hair is facial stubble. Forget shaving anything on your face.

Shape Eye Brows with Threading, Waxing and Plucking with Tweezers

Eyebrows are tricky creatures. You know how they’re supposed to look, but sometimes they don’t want to cooperate, and because they’re growing out of your head, they have a semi permanent character that defies wishes and good intentions.

One of the many problems of eyebrows is the fact that if they aren’t the right color, they can either dominate your face or disappear entirely. Their unfortunate (but necessary) proximity to your eyeballs makes it a pretty major no-no to just sweep the haircolor across each brow and hope it doesn’t drip into your eyes. That’s why the goddess of practical beauty created the eyebrow pencil, an unsatisfactory solution, but sometimes better than nothing if your eyebrows happen to be very pale.

Shaping Your Eyebrows: How to get the perfect arch shape

Shape is also crucial, and if your eyebrows are coarse, creating and maintaining the ideal shape is difficult because pulling out individual hairs can leave large gaps, or severely shorten the length of a brow if you happen to pull out the half-inch hair on the very end.

The perfect eyebrow starts above the inside corner of your eye (over the tear duct), and ends at the outside corner, above your eyelashes. Eyebrows should have an arch: in nature, it’s rarely where it should be, which is a frustrating commentary on standards of beauty. Ideally, the arch happens over the iris, the colored part of your eye. It should be gentle, so if you’re planning to reshape your arch, take it very, very slowly. Do a hair or two a day, and err on the side of caution. Hasty plucking can give you a surprised look that lasts for weeks.

How to Pluck Eyebrows with Tweezers: The Do's and Don'ts

Many women pluck their eyebrows with tweezers. Some wax them, but wax is tricky because it’s hard to get an accurate shape. And some go to a hair removal salon to try "threading." Although threading is newly popular in the United States, it is a centuries-old technique of hair removal practiced in India. The eyebrow experts say never, never to pluck your eyebrows from above, but always to pluck from the bottom of the brow. I say, if you have some wild or stray or bushy hairs growing above your brows, feel free to pluck them. I did it once, and nothing bad happened to me.

I read somewhere that it’s okay to trim your eyebrows. I think this is good if the single hairs are long and thick. You can pluck some hairs and trim the others, brushing them up, evening the ends (be careful not to trim too much!), then brushing them down checking again and again as you go along.

Use Eyebrow Gel to Keep Your Brow Shape Neat after Tweezing

Finally, keeping your brows neat can be done with special eyebrow gel, or you can use a little hair gel to smooth them and keep them shapely.

Sun Protection: Using Sunscreen & Wise Exposure to the UVB/UVA Rays

Judy got married before anyone else, and although we all envied her happiness and her handsome hubbie and their beautiful home, when she had her first baby, all envy stopped. She ballooned up and couldn’t wear her clothes: even her gorgeous shoe collection was rendered obsolete by hormonal horrors. She was sick every day for three solid months, she got moody and no one could get along with her, and once the baby came along, she had a terrible time getting back to her pre-baby weight.

Still, she went low-carb and worked out like a fiend. She stuck to her plan, and eventually the weight came off, and those cute tangerine suede loafers (from J. Crew) slipped smoothly back onto her perfect size seven feet.

Judy swears by several things that helped her regain her post-baby beauty. One was the support of her hubbie Mike, who changed his work schedule so she could have afternoons to herself four days each and every week. This helped her get to the gym and the salon, while Mike and Baby Emily bonded. The second thing was her mom-in-law Freddie, who baby-sits once or twice a week so that Mike and Judy can go out and pretend to be normal people again. (What a nice woman –is Judy the luckiest, or what?)

The third thing Judy swears by is called Rosebud Salve, a family-company retro-classic that comes in a groovy rose-labeled tin and smells like a little bit of heaven. Judy uses it for everything, from lip balm to burn ointment. She says it kept her nursing days smooth and pain-free by using it morning and night, you-know-where. And when little Emily developed a babyish but unattractive rash in a tender place, Judy hauled out the tin of Rosebud Salve and slathered it on.

Types of Perfumes and Fragrance Categories

Perfume has always been a vital part of human culture: people have perfumed their hair and bodies with oils, resins, flower and herb extracts and animal scents since earliest history. Wearing scent is pleasurable; it is an expression of individuality; it attracts mates and makes us nice to be close to. Perfumes are more for the wearer: they make us feel wonderful.

Fragrances are classed—and priced—by their alcohol content, with the least expensive being eau de toilettes and eau de colognes containing between 3% and 8% fragrance with the other 92-97% of the content being made up of alcohol, water and color. Eau de parfum contains actual perfume oils of 8-15%. You pay more for perfume because it is stronger at application and lasts longer than eau de toilette. Perfume (or “parfum”) contains somewhere between 15% and 30% of perfume oils and lasts longer than other scent types—typically around six hours. Always try to take a sample of perfume home to try for a week or two and make sure it is the right fragrance and strength for you before buying.

Fragrance Blending Families

Fragrances may be floral, spicy, woody, herbal, musky, powdery (also called “chypre”) or “aqueous” a recent designation for aromatherapy scents that are based more on a concept of a “watery” smell than an actual scent. The recent rediscovery of herbal and floral scents combined with recent technology for scent capture has created new markets for subtle extracts—“headspace” scents extracted through the use of gas chromatography, creating entirely new classes of perfumes. Food scents such as vanilla, chocolate, cherry and coffee have made their way into perfumery to the chagrin of many classical perfumers and to the happiness of younger customers who like fruity, foody, unsophisticated scents. Many perfumes combine the scent categories, creating combinations such as “Oriental” which is usually identified by heavy florals and spices. Aldehydes, which made their debut with the heady scent of Chanel No. 5, are pure chemicals whose particular odors are named by letters rather than names. Aldehydes, while completely man-made are also compelling and immensely popular, making up many of the elegant perfumes of today.

Stop a Nail Biting Habit with Proper Natural Nail Care

The first thing we can all do in having good-looking hands is to keep them clean by washing regularly. It’s amazing how many people (guys especially, but some women and girls too) walk around with grubby non manicured finger nails. Get a nail brush and put it by the sink, so it’s convenient whenever you wash your hands. An added plus of a nail brushing your fingers is the way it feels: those soft bristles and the luxurious soapy lather take your hands on a daily very mini spa vacation. Always follow up with a nice hand cream or lotion to keep your hands moisturized.

Stop nail biting. Break your toddler or child's habit early

Beautiful hands and nail care start with basics, and not having raggy, bleeding cuticles is a primary step in having presentable hands. Granted, one of the hardest habits to break is to stop fingernail biting, but it’s also one of the more disfiguring things that can happen to a hand. We all know someone who bites their nails to the quick, then starts on those ragged cuticles. Nail-biting usually starts in early childhood as a toddler with some people never outgrowing it, while others only revert to nail-biting in times of stress.

Nail care and nail biting products

There are some products on the market to stop nail-biting, super-hot or bitter things to paint on your nails. I've heard some nail-biters say that the nasty taste didn't stop them, but they must work for some people.

Finally, for nail-biters and non-nail-biters alike, hand cream right before bed is a great way to keep your skin smooth. When things are looking rough (or if you’re a biter who’s trying to quit), you can get some wonderfully thin cotton gloves, slather on a hand cream like Sephora’s Bliss Glamour Glove Gel and glove up until morning. The cotton will keep the hand cream off the pillows and on your hands where it belongs. And for a real spa-treatment, get some little cotton socks and give your feet the same experience.

Nail polish shows off those fingers

And for a little something extra try a nice bright nail polish for your next manicure. OPI nail products give a great professional finish that looks like you went to a manicure salon or spa. But buyer beware of the "fake" acrylic manicure. Your own natural nails are better than using fake "glue on" nails. If your manicurist doesn't properly clean tier tools, acrylic nail application can cause the dreaded nail fungus that has to be specially treated for months at a time. My advice save the acrylic french manicure for a special event or occasion like attending the Boston symphony in a black sleek gown.

History and Origins of Perfume, Fragrance and Cologne

When the Emperor Napoleon of France was about to return from battle, he sent a message to Josephine. “Am returning in three days. Don’t wash.” While modern-day noses may not agree with Napoleon’s sentiments, there is some evidence that lovers are attracted by each others’ natural smell above and beyond the scents of soap, perfume, fragrance, cologne and chewing gum. That we are influenced by naturally-emitted scents called pheromones, so subtle and yet so powerful that we can be drawn to or repelled by people for reasons we don’t even understand. (History doesn’t record whether or not Josephine obeyed Napoleon’s order.)

Olfactory research has shown that certain odors can prevent shoplifting, inspire confidences and make us hungry even when our stomachs are full. The perception of fragrance is embedded in the portion of our brains where emotions arise, making smells from childhood immediate memory triggers, and creating a strong emotional pull towards or away from smells depending on the positive or negative associations of the memories they are attached to.

Choosing a perfume is like choosing a lover: you don’t rush; you learn everything you can; you take your own feelings seriously. With an eye to these requirements, the aim of this article is to teach you about the types of fragrance, the fragrance families, the right ways to wear perfume, and how to shop for the perfect perfume.

Healthy Pregnancy Information on Proper Beauty Care, Exercise & Nutrition

Women are having babies later in life, and many women are into their forties before the biological time bomb goes off, leaving them thinking, "Omigad: I've just got to have a baby RIGHT NOW". The sudden baby urge is a phenomenon that has never been explained satisfactorily, and now, with women starting high-powered careers in their twenties, and realizing fifteen years down the road that, in the struggle of getting that MBA they forgot to do things about getting pregnant, it isn't so much explored as it is attacked with calendars, hormones, thermometers and implantations.

It's safer than ever before to have a late-life child, but Down syndrome and other birth defects do become more likely, and complications that result in injury to the mother are more likely too. The fact is, our bodies are vastly different at forty-something than they are at twenty-something; less resilient, longer to heal. Modern medical care makes it possible for preemies of under one pound to grow into healthy adults, and with today's understanding of the importance of planning, nutrition, and supplements such as folic acid, older moms experience much less risk than they did even ten years ago.

If you're pregnant and in your late thirties to early forties, you probably have inner and outer resources than younger women. You've probably planned your pregnancy, painted the nursery and are emotionally ready for motherhood. You may even have money saved for your child's education. So, with all your ducks in a tidy row, it may seem even more unfair that morning sickness, fatigue, bloating and blotchy skin are dancing attendance on your upcoming blessed event.

It may not be a surprise to you that many of the things you should be doing to stay healthy during pregnancy are also the things that will keep you looking your best, even in those early, wretched and retching, weeks. Read on for before, during and after beauty tips for pregnant ladies and brand-new moms.

1. I know you think you should be and could be Superwoman. You could try, but you'll probably just wear yourself out, and frankly, they don't give awards for Superwomen. If you can afford it, cut back on the work hours, take every sick day, holiday and personal day off, and don't even think about taking a shorter-than-usual maternity leave.

2. Rest. Step away from the computer, put your feet up, close your eyes, read a book, listen to music. Sleep doesn't count as rest, by the way: your normal nighttime sleep is also still required. Rest in between meetings at work, take naps on weekends, and avoid social events you don't really want to attend anyway by saying quietly (and with just a hint of gravity), "Oh, I'd love to, but I can't. I have to rest."

3. To assist you in resting, consider having groceries or dry cleaning delivered, go out for a meal once in awhile instead of cooking at home, and enlist the aid of those who live with you in things like doing the dishes, putting stuff away, or cleaning the tub. You might feel guilty before the baby comes, but once that wee creature arrives, you'll kick yourself for not having pre-trained your family to help.

4. When you aren't resting, exercise. Take walks, go swimming or take water aerobics, do whatever activities your ob-gyn says is okay for your particular stage of gestated bliss. Exercise is great for the skin, perks up the mental attitude, keeps the kilos down, and promotes your baby's health too.

5. Obviously, you won't smoke, take dope, use over-the-counter medications, or drink alcohol. Pay attention to your caffeine intake, too (remember, what Mommy does, Baby does too). Also, watch the sugar. Diabetes occurs more frequently in older pregnant women, and watching your diet can help keep your blood sugar under control.

6. Undereye circles sometimes come along with morning sickness because you get dehydrated, and it shows up in the thinning skin under the eyes. Drink plenty of water throughout your pregnancy.

7. Buy the prettiest maternity clothes you can find. Subsiding into sweats for months on end will compound any feelings of unattractiveness you may experience. Your body will certainly grow rounder--even around the ankles--but that's no reason to give up on fashion. Fashion loves you, and will always take you back.

8. Your skin color may change during pregnancy, and you may need to buy different shades of makeup. Some lucky women look fabulous between months four and eight: their skin glows, their eyes sparkle. If you are one of these women, count your blessings. If you're one of the other 90%, treat yourself to an occasional facial.

9. Some women get acne from the drastic hormonal surges of pregnancy. Check with your doctor before using anything remotely medicinal: your skin may absorb chemicals that aren't good for the baby. The acne is temporary, and will disappear once your body's hormone levels have evened out.

10. During your pregnancy and after the baby comes, accept help when it's offered. Lots of new moms feel that they should be able to do everything themselves, but in fact, it takes a village to keep Baby's laundry done. Line up a reliable sitter before the birth, so that as soon as you can, you can go out for dinner or a movie without worrying. Let friends cook you dinner, and coerce family members into chores. Fatherly creatures should also be pressed into service when it comes to hourly chores such as feeding, changing or holding Baby.Training your partner in baby-tending does more than get you some extra sleep: it helps Dad and Baby bond.

Business Professional Dress Code for Women in the Office

Your work wardrobe depends largely on what you do for a living, and if you aren't a natural-born fashion hound, it can be difficult to put together work ensembles that are practical, comfortable and affordable. Besides the obligatory chinos and polo shirt-uniforms of many retail establishments, there are three types of working wardrobes: professional, business casual and casual. In this column, we're going to cover the basics of dressing for the professional office.

Women's Business Professional Workplace Dress Code Described

Probably the easiest wardrobe to assemble is the professional one that most large corporate firms expect from women. Most corporations and firms whose employees affect professional dress have strict if unwritten dress codes: observing what other people wear is the best way to decide on your own wardrobe basics. Even now, many firms expect women to dress in skirts rather than pants to work, which raises complications in terms of choosing comfortable shoes that look good. If you are applying for a position with a company where professional dress is the norm, do as much reconnaissance work as you can to determine what designers are favored, whether suit blouses are strictly white and tailored or more feminine and colorful, and what makeup styles are in fashion. Wear the best shoes you can afford to your interview, spend more money on hose that won't snag and run before you even get to the interview, and wear a skirt, even if women also wear pants in that culture.

How to Dress for a Job Interview

When you're interviewing, it's always better to dress a little more on the formal and conservative side. This is relative, of course. If you're going for a job at a funky piercing studio, you shouldn't show up in Donna Karan, but leave the ripped jeans at home until you've gotten the job. For professional work environments, it means opting for tailored over trendy and severe over sexy. Forget the Allie McBeal micro-minis and tights tops: TV fashion does not apply in the real-world professional workplace, and people won't take you seriously if the first thing they recall about you is your astonishing cleavage. If you want to base your wardrobe on a relevant TV show, think West Wing or The Practice.
