Winter weather can cause numerous problems for your skin, particularly if you live in an area that is tremendously cold and dry. The combination of harsh weather conditions outside and additional factors like dry indoor heat can damage all types of skin. Even if your skin is normal and healthy the rest of the year, it actually can become more dry or sensitive during the winter. Follow the suggestions here as part of your regular skin care routine, and you can avoid many of the negative effects of winter weather.
- Always use non-drying, gentle cleansers or soaps. Exfoliating products can cause redness and irritation. For normal skin, look for healthy ingredients such as vitamins and essential oils. Go for Dermalogica skin care which offers various products for different skin types.
- Moisturize your face and body. People of all skin types should use some sort of daily moisturizer anyway, but you might need to step up your routine in the winter. The best time to apply them is directly after showering or bathing, in order to lock in the moisture. Avoid lotions and creams with alcohol, fragrances, and artificial colors.
- Remember to apply sunscreen all year, not just in the summer. Many facial and body lotions already contain sunscreens in them, saving you time and money. A sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 is a suggested minimum for effective protection. Try Dermalogica sun Protection which can provide you a much better care. If you are prone to sunburn, you should use lotions with a higher SPF.
- Wear gloves when you are outside to prevent your hands from becoming dry, red, and cracked. Applying hand cream prior to putting on your gloves will provide even more protection for your hands. Aveda offers you some special products for hand care which can be a good option for winter care. Further shield yourself from damaging winter winds, always wear a hat and scarf as well.
